Last year, we tried something new. We brought JCON USA into IBM TechXchange and created a Java community conference inside a much larger technology event. The result showed us that these two worlds fit together remarkably well. JCON brought the independent, developer-to-developer spirit of the Java community. TechXchange provided the scale, infrastructure, learning opportunities, and access to experts that only a major international conference can offer.

Most developers using AI tools are still guessing. The Eclipse Foundation’s first AI Coding Workshop in Brussels was built to change that. It’s a brand new format they launched in Brussels, which makes sense: most of the Eclipse event team is based there. They plan to bring it to more cities from here, so keep an eye out if you want to attend such a workshop in the future. They offered 10 free tickets to share with the BeJUG and Foojay community. And in all honesty, I used one for myself. Jonas Helming from EclipseSource led the workshop, with a fun quiz hosted by Thomas Froment in the afternoon. Here’s what I took away.

Time vampire (n) – a service or application that is said to suck time from engineers by warming up and updating at preternaturally slow speeds.

You’re on deadline to finish a project, and you open the application to do your work. The application informs you that it needs to update before it will open. Based on past experience, you have half an hour to burn before this time vampire is ready.

Foojay.io At JFall 2024 (And The Winner Is...)

Last week JFall—the “Biggest Java Conference of the Netherlands”—took place. Foojay.io, the Friends Of OpenJDK, were there in full force, including a booth with stickers and other swag, as well as Frank Delporte with his popular Foojay.io Podcast, doing live interviews with attendees.

Not only Frank was present throughout the day, doing interviews for upcoming podcast episodes, but so was his 14-year-old son Vik (in yellow sweater in the pic above), handling the technical side and directing the interviews like a true and enthusiastic professional.
