Who we are?

What is Foojay?

Foojay- Friends Of OpenJDK - is the integrated dashboard for all things Java: a central resource for daily information, curated highlights and categorized reference material for the Java community.

Rather than one single blog or one vendor's view, Foojay collates news, technical deep-dives, release data and community voices into one place - free, vendor-neutral and created by the Java community. Day to day, that includes:

  • Daily News - a daily stream of blog posts, tutorials and news from Java developers, JDK engineers and industry contributors around the world.
  • The Foojay Podcast - conversations with the people building and shaping the Java platform.
  • OpenJDK Update Release Details - community-curated tracking of fixes and CVEs in recent OpenJDK updates.
  • Glossary & Java Quick Start - reference material and guided tutorials for developers learning Java or getting oriented in the ecosystem.
  • JC-AI Newsletter - a regular briefing at the intersection of Java and AI.
  • Event Calendar - Java events happening worldwide.

Why we're here?

Java developers shouldn't have to piece together useful information from many different sources. We wanted to create one place that's accurate, timely and vendor-neutral - where you can trust what you're reading because it's coming from the community members working on Java hands-on. So that's what we built: a home for the maintainers, contributors and everyday developers.

Where the name comes from?

Foojay is the place to be for the Friends Of OpenJDK. But what is the history behind this name?

“Foo”, as we know, is a placeholder in demo apps. This site and community is, likewise, a placeholder for your content, of all kinds. In particular, it is “Foo” for “J”, i.e., “Java”. The name should really be “FooJ” but then it would be weird to pronounce. “Jay” is the right way to pronounce the J in “FooJ”, which at the same time is the name of a bird, and gave us a nice base for a logo. The initial logo was created by a designer, and used as the basis for several variations by Gerrit Grunwald.

Oracle owns the trademark on Java and OpenJDK, and it's not allowed to use those names freely ofr initiatives like Foojay. So that's how “Foojay” became the name for the place for Friends of OpenJDK.
